Welcome!

Welcome to the Mount Holyoke Club of Chicago!

Welcome alumnae, students, and community members!  This website provides basic details about the Club, its officers, its activities, and contact information.  To learn about upcoming events, please subscribe to our e-newsletter and join our Facebook group.

Despite its physical distance from campus, Chicago has a lot in common with Mount Holyoke College.  Both places have a strong sense of community, which creates a strong sense of pride for those who are members of each.  It may come as no surprise then that Mount Holyoke and the City of Chicago were founded in the very same year!

History

In 1874, just three years after the Chicago Fire, a small group of alumnae formed the Mount Holyoke Alumnae Association of the Northwest.  This was the second alumnae club to be formed; its membership extended all the way to the West Coast and included Puget Sound and Portland.  In 1877, Chicago alumnae split off from the Northwest and formed their own club.

Emily White Smith was the first chair of the Chicago Club, so the Club founded a scholarship in her name for a first-year student from the Chicago area.  The scholarship remains active to this day.  In order to help meet the financial needs of incoming students from the Chicago area, the Club raises funds for the scholarship.

Get involved today!

Currently, there are about 500 alumnae living in the city and the surrounding suburbs. The Club sponsors various events and co-sponsors yet more with the local Seven Sisters and Ivy League alumni clubs.

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to get involved with helping to run the Club.  We are a volunteer organization after all, so the more people we have at the helm, the more we can accomplish.  If there is a need that the Club does not currently address or an area where the Club could do better, please do not hesitate to step up and help us out.  Our officer structure is flexible and we can add positions as needed.  As for coordinating events, the Club has always maintained an informal and relaxed policy.  If there is a particular event you are interested in organizing for the Club–or if you hear of an event that you think would be of interest to other Club members–please let the Board know!

Please sign up for our monthly e-newsletter, which is the primary way we get the word out about upcoming events, such as Loop happy hours, lectures, arts and culture events, and admission events.  We also post all of our events in our Facebook group.

Help support the Club by paying dues!

Your dues help the Club sponsor the Joanne H. Alter ’49 Lecture of Women in Politics, purchase supplies for teachers and students at the Mary Lyon Elementary School, adopt a “Mary Lion” at the Lincoln Park Zoo, and contribute to the Emily White Smith Scholarship Fund.  Additionally, dues help the Club to secure venues and provide refreshments at our events.

Dues are a suggested donation of $25 and paying members of the Club will receive reduced pricing and special recognition to all applicable Club events.  Dues can be paid online through our PayPal account.  If you prefer to pay your dues by check, please contact the Board directly.
